Yesterday, I got a phone call from my son as he was nearing his home in Dare county after a trip to Omaha telling me there were hundreds of wintering Tundra swans sitting in a field off of HWY 64 between Plymouth and Creswell, NC. We were in the middle of fixing today's Thanksgiving meal but decided to drop everything and jumped in our SUV to check them out. The weather was not at all ideal but to see this many swans not in a refuge was worth the short drive.Â
Eastern North Carolina is the wintering ground for more than 100,000 swans and if you are lucky you just might see hundreds of swans in a day's time. I really look forward each year to the return of these migratory waterfowl along with many other species of birds that call North Carolina home during the colder months.
We could not get very close to them but we enjoyed watching them for a few minutes at a distance. This is not the best video as I was sitting inside the SUV with a plastic bag that squirrel corn as a raincoat for my Sigma 150-600 lens. Listen closely and you can hear the rain hitting the bag.
